Enhancing Quiz Protection with 2-Step Authenticati

When it comes to online quizzes especially in a professional or educational setting, ensuring the right people are taking your quizzes is crucial. That's where two-step authentication comes in. Let's break down how it works, why it's important, and how ClassMarker makes implementing it easy.

What Is Two-Step Authentication?
Simply put, two-step authentication (also known as two-factor authentication) adds an extra layer of security to your quizzes. Instead of just using a single password, quiz takers must verify their identity through a second method, like a unique access code or a separate confirmation process.

You can set up this feature in the “My Account” page under the security tab.

Why Does It Matter?
Imagine this: You've created a high-stakes exam for a group of employees that affects promotions or bonuses. If someone shares the quiz link or password, what's stopping someone else from taking the test for them? Two-step authentication helps prevent this kind of unauthorized access and ensures that only the intended participant can take the quiz.

The Practical Benefits for Your Organization
  1. Increased Security: Two-step authentication significantly reduces the risk of cheating or impersonation. It ensures that your assessment results are accurate and trustworthy, which is particularly important for compliance training or certification exams.
Example: You can require quiz takers to receive a unique Access Code sent to them separately, adding an extra step of verification before they can start the quiz.
  2. Protects Sensitive Information: If your quizzes include proprietary or sensitive information (like product training details or financial compliance questions), two-step authentication adds an extra shield to keep that information safe.
Example: Use Custom Access control to ensure that only authorized personnel can view and complete your quizzes. Combine this with IP address restrictions or timed access for even more security.
  3. Prevents Sharing and Unauthorized Access: You've worked hard to design a quiz that fairly assesses your participants. Two-step authentication prevents someone from sharing their login details or quiz link with others who shouldn't be taking it.

Additional Security Measures

Requiring a unique user ID: Another effective way to minimize cheating is to assign a unique user ID for each test taker. With ClassMarker, you can make sure that no one can take your quiz without entering the correct ID.

How It Works: ClassMarker won't allow any test taker to access the quiz unless they provide the corresponding user ID.

Attempts allowed: You can also use the 'Attempts Allowed' feature per user ID to enhance security. This limits the chances of someone guessing a valid ID.

Example: You can set the attempts allowed to two. If a user enters an incorrect ID twice, even if they manage to guess the correct ID on the third attempt, ClassMarker will still reject it. This drastically reduces the risk of unauthorized access.

Enable Access Lists: Access Lists are available if you wish to restrict access to tests assigned via Links. They consist of a list of Access Codes that have been created by you and can be any alphanumeric string of your choosing (for example, email address, student/employee ID, etc).

Add and edit Access Lists under Links / settings / Access Lists.

Set IP Access Restrictions: Further secure your quizzes by limiting access to Assistants, Group members or Links by IP addresses. IP restrictions minimize the chances of test takers completing exams from unapproved or potentially compromised locations, like public Wi-Fi networks.

With ClassMarker's built-in features, you can set up these safeguards easily and have peace of mind knowing your quizzes are both secure and accurate. Please see our advanced settings and developers guide for more information.
