Question 2
The Case of the Cement Dilemma
You own a cement company that you started 12 years ago. You operate in a small town called Listowel and deal with most of the local building contractors for cement, sand, etc. You have a reputation of high quality products, and for good customer service with your customers. You employ a team of 35 workers who prepare and deliver your cement and other products. On top of these employees you have one foreman who oversees the operations while you are busy with the business side of your company.
Every Thursday your foreman has been instructed to run a series of quality control tests on your cement products to make sure the mixture is correct and that it meets all safety regulations. Since your cement is often used for building foundations it is crucial that it meets the necessary requirements. It is late Thursday afternoon and your foreman has just run into your office.
"Boss, I just finished the last test and I've got some bad news. The latest batch of cement is exactly 9% less durable than our typical product. What do you want me to do?"
"Well can't we just remix it and fix the problem?" you reply.
"The foreman answers, "No, that would take at least 3 more days and we have a huge contract with one of customers that states we guarantee delivery tomorrow. This customer accounts for about 1/3 of our business - we don't want to break contract. The good news is that the cement is still up to safety code. We could ship and we wouldn't be breaking the law. It isn't the type of quality we promise our customers but they wouldn't be able to sue us for sending it."
Just then your accountant pops his head in the door.
"Hey Boss. I know it's not a good time but I need to tell you that we are in a bit of a squeeze for cash right now. We owe our suppliers a couple thousand dollars and it's due Monday. I heard about the cement quality problem and I understand the situation, but we can't afford to lose this job."
What should you do?
-Use the 5-step Case Study Method to develop a solution.
-Use a heading for each step.
-Point form answers are acceptable.
