Question 1
The Case of the Missing Gasoline

Jack Moyer started a small landscaping business when he was only 16 years old. Initially he bought just one lawnmower and then borrowed some other tools from his dad. His first summer he earned $8,000 and he was hooked!

He opted not to go to college or university since he knew he could earn a great living by expanding his business. It was in his third year that the company really took off. Word of mouth traveled and pretty soon Jack had so many clients that he had hired 12 employees and 2 managers. By this point he had 5 trucks and thousands of dollars invested in equipment for the company. Things were looking great.

Towards the middle of the summer Jack noticed something strange. His sales were off the charts, but his profits were actually down 10%. He dug a little deeper and found that many expenses had grown tremendously. Specifically, the company was using up way more gasoline than it usually would have, which wasn't good since gas prices were so high.

To figure things out Jack approached Tom, one of his managers.

"It's not my fault," Tom protested. "I think it's Bill. I saw him using company gasoline for his own car. I thought you might have told him it was okay."

Jack immediately went to speak with Bill, the other company manager. Bill was outraged that he had been blamed.

"It wasn't me - it was Tom! I saw him stealing gas and he even got some of the other guys to take it too! I don't trust that guy!"

At home, Jack was confused. He had always trusted his workers but now he didn't know who to believe. He did know that something had to be done. He had just secured a big contract with a local sports complex. It would earn a lot of money but was also going to be a lot of work. There's no way he could get this job done if he has to spend every minute watching his employees. Plus, he couldn't afford to lose profits to dishonest managers. Just then his radio buzzed.

"Jack, come quick. Tom and Bill are in a fight and doesn't look good."
