The patient you are interpreting for is very talkative. The doctor asks the patient how long he has had a stomach ache and the patient starts talking about an unrelated bike injury when he was a child. The doctor is starting to look impatient. According to the interpreter code of ethics, it is okay for an interpreter to summarize, edit or modify what the patient is saying to save time.

After you finish interpreting for a very friendly patient, the patient offers to buy you lunch to thank you and show her gratitude. You are very hungry and the appointment is finished, but you feel you should not go to lunch with the patient because according to interpreter ethics, an interpreter must maintain a professional distance from the patient and avoid becoming personally involved.

The doctor prescribes an antibiotic for a patient to treat his pneumonia.  You remember that you once had pneumonia a few years ago and were given a different antibiotic that you think might be better.  According to interpreter ethics, it is okay for an interpreter to share his opinion and suggest that the doctor prescribe a different type of medicine for the patient.

You have just finished interpreting for a pregnant patient who is only fifteen years old. You, the doctor, and the patient were the only ones in the exam room. When you leave, you see the patient's mother sitting in the waiting room and she asks you what happened to her daughter. According to interpreter ethics, it is okay to share confidential information about the patient to her mother because she is family and is very worried about her child.  

You are sent to the police station to interpret between police officers and a man who has been arrested for drunk driving.  When you arrive at the station, you realize that the man who has been arrested is well-known in your community, and you once had dinner with him and his family at their home. According to interpreter ethics, you should immediately tell the police officers that you know this man, and whether or not you feel you will be able to objectively interpret for him since you have a prior relationship.
